Jaryd continued to kick his legs. He ignored the alert, focused on reaching the surface and getting back to his friends.

Below him, a rune covered stone circle along the sandy bottom, opened. An invisible force took hold of the midknight. Jaryd grunted as bubbles escaped between his teeth. Something had a hold of him and he couldn’t break free. It pulled with supernatural force and instantly, he was sucked down into the hole and was gone. The rune covered stone slid back into place and the small glow of magical energy died.

The metal golem swung its large arms, trying to strike down the blacksmith. Petra kept moving, dodging each of the strikes. When she glanced to the side, she saw that Venna and Yola were pulling the struggling Nelga to the downstairs entrance. When they stepped through, the blacksmith spun away, dodging a large fist.

Petra darted away from the construct and toward the others. The metal golem followed, reaching out and trying to grab her. Yola and Nelga shouted to the blacksmith as she closed the distance. When she was close, she bent her legs and jumped.

The metal golem reached out, iron fingers inches from Petra’s boot. The blacksmith tucked her body into a roll, her boot pulled away from the golem. Petra flew through the entrance and into waiting hands. The four of them crashed to the floor and slid to a halt. All heads lifted up and looked over before a loud crash slammed into the entrance.

The golem reached in with a massive arm, its fingers about three feet from grabbing any of them. The construct’s large body and wide shoulders prevented it from fitting through the open portal. It struggled to reach, its dispassionate, glowing eyes focused on subduing the threat.

“We have to keep moving,” Venna said.

Nelga shook her head, “We’re not leaving until we get Jaryd back.”

Petra stood by the dwarf’s side, hammer at the ready.

“That blow was enough to break bones. Jaryd could be drowning in the lake at this very moment,” Venna said with urgency.

“We’re not leaving,” Nelga declared. “Prepare for a rescue mission,” the dwarf said and readied her axe as the metal golem continued to claw at them through the small entrance.
